GASTRIC SLEEVE

Gastric sleeve surgery is a surgical procedure which consists of reducing the stomach’s capacity for the ingestion of food, which causes the patient to feel satisfied eating a smaller amount of food. This is a laparoscopic procedure.

In addition, studies have shown that in the portion of the stomach that is removed from the body, there are cells that produce a substance called ghrelin, which has to do with lack of fullness at the time of eating. In patients with elevated amounts of this substance, it causes the patient to keep eating and eating and when this substance is lowered, it reduces the feeling of the need to keep eating in large quantities.

In this laparoscopic surgery, the average surgical time is 60 minutes. Patients generally only stay in the hospital for one night.

Supplements such as protein, vitamins and minerals are required, but not as strictly as with bypass surgery. And this is only for a specified period of time, generally during the first year after the surgery.

Gastric sleeve surgery allows the patient to eat all types of foods but in smaller quantities, which causes them to feel satisfied when eating small amounts of food, reducing hunger and allowing them to keep losing weight and when they reach their ideal weight, to maintain it more easily. There is no dumping syndrome with this procedure.

It is suggested that the patient not have gastro-esophageal reflux in order to have the best results with the surgery. Because surgery in patients with severe reflux may increase symptoms of reflux due to the increase in pressure in the new stomach.

*The end results may be different in each patient and depend on the type of surgery, the changes in eating habits, exercise and medical and nutritional follow-up.

GASTRIC BYPASS

Gastric bypass surgery is considered the Gold standard of weight loss surgeries www.asmbs.org. Many people believe that it is the only surgery for patients who are morbidly or extremely obese and that a lot of excess weight is required to qualify for a gastric bypass, but the truth is that gastric bypass surgery can be suitable for many patients who are seeking a weight loss surgery and who also suffer from metabolic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and in cases of obesity and gastro-esophageal reflux. Gastric bypass surgery is laparoscopic, requires only one night in the hospital and the average time of surgery is 2 hours. The patient is usually close to walking within 4 hours of their surgery. It is necessary to supplement with protein, vitamins and minerals for a period of at least 2 years.

GASTRIC BAND SURGERY

Gastric band surgery was a surgery that was performed during a long period of time, but it is currently not being practiced or performed. This is due to the patients who, in many cases, regained weight within a few years of having the surgery. Because of this, gastric bands are instead being removed in patients that regained weight after gastric band surgery and are seeking a weight loss revision surgery that can mean the removal of the gastric band for a conversion gastric sleeve o gastric bypass.

WEIGHT LOSS REVISION SURGERY

Weight loss revision surgeries in Mexico are performed in patients that have previously had a weight loss surgery, such as a Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass Surgery.

This procedure known as a weight loss revision surgery is more necessary for patients that regain a significant amount of weight after reaching a low weight.

The main reason why patients consider having a weight loss revision surgery has to do with the weight loss, whether they didn’t lose enough weight after the surgery or whether they regained a lot of weight. Therefore, before undergoing a weight loss revision surgery, it is important that the patient follow the surgeon’s instructions.

MINI GASTRIC BYPASS

Mini gastric surgery refers to a gastric bypass but with only one anastomosis. Traditional bypass surgery in Y involves two unions of the intestine and the stomach and the mini gastric bypass only involves one union of the intestine and the stomach. It consists of making a small stomach so that the patient feels satisfied when consuming a smaller amount of food and utilizing the intestine as a bypass but with only one union of anastomosis. It is a surgery for patients who are morbidly or even super obese, in which a traditional Y shaped bypass would be more complex to perform and would require more surgical time. The mini gastric bypass is a surgery that allows for losses of weight equal to or greater than that with Y shaped gastric bypass. But in some patients, in causes them to have bile reflux since the bile passes just below the new stomach, which is not the case in the Y shaped gastric bypass.

SINGLE INSISION GASTRIC SLEEVE

The gastric sleeve surgery known as SILS (Single-incision laparoscipic sleeve gastrectomy) is a relatively new technique of a new approach for gastric sleeve surgery. (Nueva frase en orginal) Technically, is involves making a traditional gastric sleeve, removing 80% of the capacity of the stomach and in this manner, causes the patient to feel satisfied with a smaller amount of food, lose weight and maintain this weight loss. The difference between SILS and gastric sleeve laparoscopic surgery is the place in which the incisions are made and the number of incisions. With SILS, the incisions are in the navel and there are only three incisions, which end up looking barely visible or noticeable. In order to be a candidate for laparoscopic SILS, it is required to have a BMI of less than 35 and under no circumstances a BMI of no less than 32 in order to have the best safety conditions for surgery.
